Frequently asked questions

How much extra tile should I buy?

Add 10% for straight layouts and 15–20% for diagonal patterns.

Are partial tiles counted?

Yes — totals round up so you have enough tiles for cuts.

Example calculations

Bathroom floor: 8 ft × 6 ft with 12×12 in tile

A 48 ft² bathroom needs 48 tiles plus 10% waste = 53 tiles, or 6 boxes if a box holds 10 tiles.

Kitchen backsplash: 10 ft × 1.5 ft with 3×6 in subway tile

A 15 ft² subway tile backsplash takes about 121 tiles with 15% waste for diagonal cuts around outlets.

Living room: 16 ft × 14 ft with 24×24 in porcelain

A 224 ft² floor needs 56 large-format tiles plus 10% waste = 62 tiles, typically 11 boxes.

Tile Calculator FAQ

How many tiles do I need per square foot?

12×12 in tiles cover 1 ft² each; 6×6 in cover 0.25 ft². Divide your floor area by the area of one tile.

How much extra tile should I order?

Add 10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal patterns and 20% for herringbone or complex patterns.

How much grout do I need?

Grout coverage depends on tile size and joint width. As a rule of thumb, one 25 lb bag covers about 100 ft² of standard 12×12 in tile with 1/8 in joints.

Should I round up partial tiles?

Always. Cut tiles can't be re-used in most cases, and rounding up protects you from running short mid-job.
